School boards help students prepare for the future by providing specialized programming for those who are gifted, and for those with special needs.
Thanks to advances in technology, students attending small and rural schools can access more programming options than ever before. Of course, that statement assumes that someone has the foresight and takes the initiative to make that programming available. One such “someone” is the board and administration of The Mountain View School Division.
The Video Conferencing Initiative is the culmination of several years of work aimed at addressing the needs of high school students in small and rural high schools throughout the division. In order to make their vision of offering an expanded number and variety of course credits a reality, the school board needed to invest heavily in infrastructure, connectivity, and professional development and training for staff. In the fall of 2008, that investment began to pay off, with three high schools able to offer courses via video conferencing. In the fall of 2009, the number of high schools with video conferencing capacity will increase to six, benefiting even more students.
