School boards help students prepare for the future by providing specialized programming for those who are gifted, and for those with special needs.
Sometimes, the greatest obstacle to reaching a goal is simply accepting that the goal is achievable. A program in The Seven Oaks School Division has gone a long way to removing that obstacle for students who have set their sights on a university education, by exposing them to university opportunities and preparing them for success.
Through First Year University Now, tuition-free first-year University of Winnipeg courses are offered to all Seven Oaks high school students. The program started ten years ago with two courses; today, six courses—Sociology, Anthropology, Biology, Calculus, English and Français—are offered to about 200 students. First Year University Now offers challenges and opportunities to students, while building their confidence and preparing them to embark on further university studies down the road.
As testimony to its success, completion rates and class averages in First Year University Now courses have consistently been equal to or better than those achieved in traditional first year university classes.
