Successmaker

When research indicated that approximately 25% of students were performing below grade level in language arts and math in The Rolling River School Division, the school board and administration took action.

In 2000, Successmaker was piloted in two schools in the division.  The program is designed to build, develop and expand skills in language arts and math for all students, and to further assist those students studying English as an additional language in their acquisition of English language skills. The pilot program was a success, and by the fall of 2003, Successmaker was available to all elementary students in the division.

By the end of grade 4, the language arts and math skills of all students are assessed.  Students identified as performing below grade level in these two core subject areas take part in the program.  Three to four times a week, for approximately 15 minutes each time, these students meet singly or in pairs to work with a teacher on their math and language arts skills.  As a result of this additional support, students are closing the gap in these subject areas, they are gaining increased confidence in their ability, and fewer interventions are being required at later grade levels.
