School boards help students prepare for full and rich futures by providing expanded programming in cultural and life-skills areas such as music, physical education and art.
Balance is something that most people strive for in their day-to-day lives, balance between competing and equally important demands on their time. Students in The Interlake School Division may have a head start on achieving that equilibrium, thanks to their experience with the Balanced School Day.
The Balanced School Day represents a break from traditional school-day scheduling. A balanced school day is divided into three equal learning blocks, separated by two nutrition and exercise breaks. The idea was first broached in the division by two school board members who had attended a session at a conference of the Canadian School Boards Association. The school board launched pilot programs in five elementary schools in 2006-2007. The following year, it was adopted at all elementary schools and one high school in the division.
What has the Balanced School Day meant to these schools? The program has taught students to take responsibility for their own physical fitness and healthier nutritional choices. It has resulted in more time on task in the classroom, and improved academic achievement. The program has also contributed to a more positive school environment, with over 90% of students, parents and staff surveyed giving it high marks.
