Safety Program Development for All Manitoba Schools

School boards may be independent when it comes to managing the schools and educational programs within their jurisdictions, but that doesn’t mean they work in isolation.  Far from it.

In the St. James-Assiniboia School Division, Health and Safety Officer Paul Deacon has been focussing his efforts on reducing the number of accidental student injuries in schools, on playgrounds, and most recently, in physical education classes.  His efforts have paid off, with a reduction in the number of reported incidents on school playgrounds in the 2007-2008 school year.

He has compiled a comprehensive collection of safety programs, policy templates, assessment tools, Workplace Safety and Health committee resources, school shops safety forms, playground safety tools and much more.  With the assistance of the provincial school boards association risk manager, these resources will be made available to school divisions across Manitoba.  The safety program developed in one school division will help all divisions optimize student safety and make a difference in student health in class and on the playground.

For more information on this program, contact Pat Elsworth, Information Officer with the St. James-Assiniboia School Division, at 204.888.7951, or via e-mail at pelsworth@sjsd.net.
