School boards help students prepare for the future by providing technical and vocational programming options.
By the late 1990s, research had made clear the indelible link between early childhood experiences and education and later school success. Acting on the basis of that research, The Division scolaire franco-manitobaine (DSFM) made a commitment to improve outcomes for Manitoba’s youngest francophones by building supports for them and their families.
The DSFM, in partnership with the Coalition francophone de la petite enfance du Manitoba, developed the concept of the Centre de la petite enfance et de la famille (CPEF) to provide quality French-language services and programs in response to the needs of young children and their families. With the support of Healthy Child Manitoba, the first two CPEFs opening in 2003; since then, two new centres have opened each year. With 40% of DSFM schools currently offering CPEF services, the division is well on its way to meeting its goal of offering the program in every divisional school. And with each year also bringing a significant increase in the number of families participating in CPEF programming, it’s clear that the division and its communities have a common view as to what is important.
